If you truly have talent but you’re not going as far and fast as you wish you would, there are usually just a few reasons why:
1. You’re good at what you do but you don’t stand out from the crowd. You need to be unique in at least one prominent way. That’s how you will build a big enough fan base to support your aspirations.
2. You don’t have a plan in place to get you where you want to go. You’re doing a lot of work but it is the wrong work. You may need to build an actual plan around “if ‘X’ is my goal, then what are the steps and milestones that I need to take and achieve to get there?” Then start working the plan.
3. There is one or more indispensable pieces of the puzzle missing. That can include:
- a vibrant website
- driving fans to the website
- an interesting monthly newsletter
- growing your mailing list
- a good EPK
- the willingness to make the calls to get the gigs
- a pleasing personality
- professionalism
- a good understanding of the way the business side of your career works
This list can go on and on. There are so many gears in an artist engine! . All of the pieces need to work together for the engine to drive you. But if you have the first two pieces I mentioned, then your problem lies somewhere in #3!
