7 Common Mistakes That Can Derail Your Music Career

  1. Being apathetic when you have a small audience. It only takes one person with the right connections to move your career in to the stratosphere. He or she may be one of your audience members.
  2. Badmouthing, knocking or embarrassing someone, especially on the internet where it is often impossible to erase it. You never know where your comments will be shared or who will read them.
  3. Looking down on or ignoring other performers. They might get a break before you and be in a position to take you with them.
  4. Not spending money on an entertainment attorney when it matters most. Think of it as insurance. Signing a bad contract can stop you in your tracks and even cost you many more times the attorney fee. My attorney always warns that it’s a ‘Pay me now or pay me later’ scenario.
  5. Not having a band agreement in place, especially as the band gets serious. Hundreds of issues need to be discussed and agreed upon, ranging from who owns the name to what happens when a member quits.
  6. Not learning the business side of your career. Without the right knowledge you might easily get taken by the sharks in the industry who troll around looking for naïve artists to sink their teeth into.
  7. Trusting the wrong people. It’s common to be flattered because someone wants to manage you, record you or have you sign an artist development deal with them. Do your homework to be sure they have a great reputation and can do everything they promise AND everything you need.
