Year-Round Dedication

It’s summertime! School’s out. Vacations are in full swing. It’s warm enough to BBQ with friends and family at night and then sit around and visit for hours. The days are longer. Maybe you have picked up a few extra summer gigs. If you’re like most people, you have a lot more energy in the spring and summer (or if it’s too hot, a very lazy season!).[private_freebie]

Have you disciplined yourself enough to stick to your music related goals amidst this huge flurry of wonderful distractions? Are you still writing or practicing as much as you should be? Are you still out networking? Have you stopped taking instrument or voice lessons for the summer? Are you still rehearsing on your own even though your band members might be on vacation or are just less available? In other words, is your dedication seasonal?

Serious artists, songwriters and music professionals know how much momentum and progress they lose by slacking off for even a few days or weeks, let alone a few months. So, they find ways to stay plugged in, to keep improving, to keep their vocal or instrumental skills in top shape, and to do it all under less than optimal circumstances. You may be embarrassed to do your vocal exercises during your camping trip. But do them anyway. You might be tempted to cancel a few band rehearsals because its nice out and you want to do something outdoorsy. Have them anyway, or reschedule them at another time so you don’t take a step backwards.

The pursuit of anything important to us is a full-time, year-round journey. Show the rest of the world how serious you are, and you’ll begin to attract the serious movers and shakers who can move your career ahead!
